Lars’ grösster Traum ist es, den Eurovision Song Contest zu gewinnen. Und obwohl ganz Húsavík (und natürlich auch ganz Island) riesige Eurovision-Fans sind, wird er vom Dorf nur belächelt und als Spinner abgetan. Mit seiner engen Freundin Sigrit (die heimlich in Lars verliebt ist) spielt er in einer Band. Wie jedes Jahr senden die beiden ein Mixtape an die Ausrichter der nationalen Vorentscheidung. Tatsächlich werden sie ausgewählt und durch ein Unglück (Sigrit ist fest davon überzeugt, dass die Elfen geholfen haben) bleiben sie als einzige Teilnehmer übrig. Und so fliegt „Fire Saga“ tatsächlich an den Wettbewerb nach Edinburgh. Ob der Wunsch von Lars in Erfüllung geht?
Lars’ greatest dream is to win the Eurovision Song Contest. And although everyone in Húsavík (and of course everyone in Iceland) is a huge Eurovision fan, the villages inhabitants only smile at him and dismiss him as a dreamer and a bit of a nutcase. He plays in a band with his close friend Sigrit (who is secretly in love with Lars) and like every year, the two send a mixtape to the committee of the national preliminaries of the music contest. By some misfortune (Sigrit firmly believes the elves helped) they are left as the only participants and are therefore chosen to represent Iceland. And so “Fire Saga” actually flies to the competition in Edinburgh. Will Lars’ wish come true?
Ich liebe diesen Film! Er ist einfach nur toll. Man lacht, man weint, fühlt mit und das Ganze mit grossartigem Soundtrack. Stellenweise sind Handlung und Texte zwar ganz schön albern und verrückt aber sie bleiben gerade noch vor der Grenze zur Lächerlichkeit. Der Film ist gespickt mit Andeutungen und Details über die isländische Gesellschaft und den Eurovision Song Contest, die extrem pointiert und selbstironisch sind und einfach nur Spass machen.
I love this movie! It is just great. You laugh, you cry, you empathize and all this with a great soundtrack. Sometimes the plot and texts are pretty silly and crazy but just stop before they get too ridiculous. The film is peppered with hints and details about Icelandic society and the Eurovision Song Contest that are extremely trenchant, self-deprecating and just plain fun.
Der Film wurde für Netflix produziert, Regie führte David Dobkin. Der US-Amerikaner Will Ferell und die Kanadierin Rachel McAdams spielen die Hauptrollen, es gibt aber auch einige Isländer, wie Ólafur Darri Ólafsson und Hannes Óli Ágústsson. Insbesondere Hannes’ Auftritt bleibt in Erinnerung durch die Textzeile “Play Jaja Ding Dong”, welche Kultstatus erreichte und inzwischen fast schon isländisches Kulturgut ist.
The film was produced for Netflix and directed by David Dobkin. American Will Ferell and Canadian Rachel McAdams play the lead roles, but there are also a few Icelanders like Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and Hannes Óli Ágústsson. Hannes’ performance in particular is remembered for the line “Play Jaja Ding Dong” which achieved cult status and is now almost an integral part of the Icelandic culture.
