Die beiden Schafbauern Gummi und Kiddi sind schon ewigs zerstritten und reden kein Wort miteinander. Blöd nur, dass sie Brüder sind und direkt nebeneinander wohnen. Die Rivalität ist gross, insbesondere wenn es um die jährliche Auszeichnung für den besten Zuchtbock geht. In diesem Jahr geht der Sieg an Kiddi. Doch Gummi entdeckt, dass sein Bock die Traberkrankheit („Scrapie“) hat und schwärzt seinen Bruder bei der Veterinärbehörde an. In den folgenden Tagen werden noch mehr Fälle der Tierseuche entdeckt und alle Schafe des Tals müssen gekeult werden, das Ende der Zuchtlinie. Doch so leicht lassen sich die beiden Sturköpfe nicht unterkriegen…
The two sheep farmers Gummi and Kiddi have been at odds for ages and don’t speak a word to each other. Too bad that they are brothers and live right next to each other. The rivalry is great, especially when it comes to the annual award for the best breeding ram. This year, the victory goes to Kiddi. But Gummi discovers that his buck has scrapie and reports his brother to the veterinary authorities. In the following days more cases of the animal disease are found and all the sheep of the valley have to be culled, the end of the breeding line. But the two stubborn brothers don’t give up that easily…
Die tödlich verlaufende Traberkrankheit ist leider auch in Island verbreitet. Ist ein Tier befallen, müssen auch alle anderen Schafe im Umkreis getötet werden und die Zucht auf den betroffenen Höfen ist für mehrere Jahre verboten. Wie sehr dies die Bauern trifft, ist in Sture Böcke anschaulich dargestellt. Typisch isländisch ist dieser Film keine Komödie und das ein oder andere Mal nicht ganz einfach anzusehen. Und dennoch wird auch hier sehr feinsinnig porträtiert, was den Menschen wichtig ist und wie mit Problemen umgegangen wird. Sehenswert!
Unfortunately, scrapie, which is a deadly disease, is also widespread in Iceland. If an animal is infected, all other sheep in the area must also be killed and breeding on the affected farms is prohibited for several years. Rams clearly shows how badly this affects the farmers. In typical Icelandic way, this film isn’t a comedy and at times not easy to watch. And yet it portrays very subtle what is important to people and how problems are dealt with. Worth seeing!
Regie führte Grímur Hákonarson, der auch das Drehbuch schrieb. Der Film gewann mehrere Auszeichnungen, unter anderem den Hauptpreis in der Kategorie Un Certain Regard am Filmfestival in Cannes und den Preis des Zürich Film Festivals als Bester Internationaler Film. Drehort sind die Farmen Bólstaður und Mýri im Bárðardalur im Norden Islands zwischen Akureyri und Mývatn.
The movie was directed by Grímur Hákonarson, who also wrote the screenplay. The film won several awards, including the main prize in the Un Certain Regard category at the Cannes Film Festival and the Zurich Film Festival prize for Best International Film. Filming locations are the farms Bólstaður and Mýri in Bárðardalur in northern Iceland between Akureyri and Mývatn.
